Healthy Nutrition on Holiday: You Can Enjoy Yourself and Stay on Track

One of the questions I get asked all the time is, "How do I stay healthy while I'm on holiday?"

My answer is always the same... you don't need to be perfect, and you definitely don't need to miss out.

Holidays are for relaxing, spending time with family and friends, making memories, and enjoying new experiences. Food is a big part of that, and I would never want you to feel guilty about enjoying it.

The key is finding balance.

Leave the "I'll Start Again When I Get Home" Mentality Behind

We've all heard it (and maybe even said it ourselves)...

"I'll just eat whatever I want this week and start fresh on Monday."

The problem is that one week can easily turn into two, and before you know it, all those great habits you've worked so hard to build have disappeared.

Instead, remind yourself that every meal is a new opportunity. If you enjoy a bigger lunch or indulge in dessert, that's absolutely fine. Your very next meal is a chance to make a nourishing choice.

One meal won't ruin your progress, just like one healthy meal won't magically transform it.

Keep Your Protein Up

If there's one thing I'd love you to focus on while you're away, it's protein.

Protein helps keep you fuller for longer, supports your muscles (especially if you've been working hard in the gym), and helps stop that constant grazing that can happen on holidays.

Try to include a source of protein at each meal, such as eggs, Greek yoghurt, chicken, fish, seafood, lean meat, tofu, or legumes.

Don't Forget Your Fruit and Veggies

Yes, enjoy the pizza, pasta, or cocktails... but also try to get some colour onto your plate.

Adding fruit and vegetables to your meals helps keep your energy up, supports digestion, and gives your body the nutrients it needs.

Sometimes it's as simple as ordering a side salad, choosing fruit with breakfast, or picking up some fresh produce from a local market.

Drink More Water Than You Think You Need

Travelling, warm weather, flying, and alcohol can all leave you dehydrated.

Carry a water bottle with you and sip throughout the day. You'll often find you feel better, have more energy, and are less likely to mistake thirst for hunger.

A simple habit is to drink a glass of water before each meal and alternate alcoholic drinks with water.

Move Your Body Because It Feels Good

You don't need to find a gym every day.

Think about all the movement that naturally comes with being on holiday.

Walk while sightseeing.
Go for a swim.
Explore a hiking trail.
Hire a bike.
Dance the night away.

Movement doesn't always have to look like a workout. It all counts.

Enjoy the Treats... Without the Guilt

One of the saddest things I see is people feeling guilty for eating the foods they love while they're away.

Please don't.

If you've travelled somewhere famous for its pastries, gelato, seafood, or local cuisine, enjoy it! Those experiences are part of the holiday.

The goal isn't to avoid those foods. The goal is to enjoy them, savour them, and then move on without feeling like you've failed.

Healthy eating isn't about never having treats. It's about what you do most of the time.

Listen to Your Body

Holiday buffets can be amazing, but they can also tempt us to eat simply because the food is there.

Slow down.

Ask yourself if you're still hungry or if you're just eating because everything looks delicious.

Remember... if it's really that good, you can always have more tomorrow.

Most Importantly... Enjoy Yourself

A holiday is just a tiny part of your health journey.

The habits you've built over the past months don't disappear because you enjoyed a few special meals.

When you get home, don't punish yourself with endless cardio or crash diets. Just slip back into your normal routine, and your healthy habits will take over again.

At the end of the day, I want you to come home with incredible memories, not regrets.

Enjoy the sunsets.
Enjoy the laughs.
Enjoy the adventures.
Enjoy the food.

Then come back refreshed, recharged, and ready to keep working towards your goals.

Because health isn't about being perfect every single day.

It's about being consistent over time, and that's exactly what gets results.
